Open Board Positions
The Alaska Chapter of BHA is currently looking to fill open board positions! Please read about the open position descriptions below. All applicants must be a current member in good standing with BHA, an Alaska resident, willing to serve a three-year term, and attend monthly board meetings when able. Fundraising Chair
Commitment: ~3–4 hours per week (flexible, seasonal increases during key campaigns)
Works closely with: Chapter Board, Event Leads, and AK Chapter Coordinator
Position Overview
The Fundraising Chair leads efforts to sustain and grow the financial health of the Alaska Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. This volunteer position plays a key role in supporting chapter operations, conservation work, and events by coordinating donor engagement, securing sponsorships, and helping organize fundraising campaigns and events.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships within Alaska’s outdoor community, has an eye for detail, and believes in conserving Alaska’s wild public lands, waters, and hunting and fishing heritage.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Fundraising Strategy
- Work with the Chapter Board and Coordinator to develop and execute an annual fundraising plan that aligns with BHA’s mission and Alaska’s unique opportunities.
- Identify fundraising priorities and assist in setting achievable financial goals for the chapter.
- Sponsorships & Donations
- Cultivate relationships with Alaska-based businesses, outfitters, breweries, and conservation partners to secure in-kind and financial donations.
- Maintain a sponsorship contact list and ensure all sponsor acknowledgments are fulfilled (logos, social media tags, etc.).
- Events & Campaigns
- Support key fundraising events such as the annual BHA Beer Dinner and membership drives, coordinating donation procurement and local promotions.
- Help identify opportunities to partner with other organizations or host joint fundraising efforts.
- Member Engagement
- Encourage chapter members to participate in fundraising and outreach activities.
- Work with communications leads to promote campaigns through email, social media, and local events.
- Recordkeeping & Coordination
- Track donations, sponsorships, and event revenue in coordination with the Chapter Treasurer and BHA Staff.
- Participate in monthly board meetings and provide fundraising updates as needed.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Passion for BHA’s mission and Alaska’s hunting, fishing, and conservation heritage.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Organized, self-motivated, and comfortable reaching out to local businesses and partners.
- Prior fundraising, event coordination, or nonprofit experience preferred (but not required).
Time Commitment
- Average of 3–4 hours per week, with flexibility based on personal schedule.
- Additional hours may be needed during major events or campaigns (typically spring and fall).

Chair
Commitment ~3-4 hours/week
The Chair is the senior volunteer leader and shall act as chapter leader of AK BHA. The Chair will act as the official representatives of AK BHA to the media and public and appoint others when not available.
The Chair shall facilitate among the board the creation of chapter goals, facilitate the development, implementation and strategic planning process to carry out the policies and objectives of the chapter, appoint committees and special positions as needed, exercise general supervision over the activities of the chapter, and preside at meetings of the chapter.
- Maintain strong working relationship with BHA coordinator and staff to ensure chapter goals and policy priorities are in-sync with North American priorities and shared values.
- Foster an efficient, productive, transparent and collaborative working environment.
- Along with the Policy Chair and Vice-Chair, lead engagement on grassroots policy issues and facilitate relationship development with key elected officials, NGO partners and stakeholders.
- Ensure chapter is meeting operational deadlines including timely submission of the annual strategic plan, volunteer hours and financial reconciliation.
Interior Regional Representative(s)
Weekly time commitment: 2-4 hours depending on scheduled events.
Each AK BHA Regional Representative shall act as a local leader and “boots-on-the-ground” representative of their region. They are encouraged to meet and know the elected representatives in their region (e.g., village, city and county), as well as other conservation organizations and state and federal wildlife and land managers. They will represent their region to the AK BHA Board to ensure a flow of information “from the ground up.” And, in turn, they shall represent AK BHA within their region in a professional manner according to AK BHA’s mission and values.
- Host events in their region.
- In some cases, this position can lead regional volunteers on special projects, form committees that volunteers can be a part of as cohorts for issues they care about but face ethical restrictions in participation BHA board participation. e.g “Habitat Watch”, “Forest Watch”, “Stream Watch” or break it down by community: “POW Watch” “Ketchikan Watch” etc. (Southeast AK references).
Stewardship Chair
Weekly time commitment: 2-4 hours depending on upcoming projects and grant execution.
The Stewardship Chair will work directly with the Board to coordinate and implement priorities to advance the improvement of wildlife, habitat, public access, hunter/angler ethics and public education.
- Provide opportunities for supporters to engage with BHA through a variety of cleanups, habitat restoration projects, and related community education events throughout the year.
- Work with Board and Communications Chair to raise awareness for both BHA led and partner volunteer opportunities.
- Collaborate with BHA staff to develop and execute projects in support of habitat and policy grants.
- Recruit and train volunteers to build a grassroots network to carry out our boots-on-the-ground priorities.
- Develop relationships with partner NGO’s and other relevant stakeholders to encourage community building and collaboration.
Provide a welcoming environment and accessibility for a diverse range of participants regardless of financial means, hunting/fishing background or demographics.
