Wyoming BHA Fall Newsletter

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

The days are getting shorter and hunting season is officially upon us. Like most of us here at Wyoming BHA, we expect many of you are spending as much time afield or on the water as possible this fall. With that in mind, here's an abbreviated recap of what we've been up to this quarter.

Policy Updates

In August, Wyoming BHA submitted comments on the Proposed Big Game Damage Claim regulation change, which was similar to HB60 that we saw earlier this year. As with HB60, our efforts were again aimed at protecting the investment of hunter and angler dollars from a significantly expanded damages program that would incentivize wildlife to consolidate on private lands without any corresponding increase in public access.

What We’ve Been Up To

This June, Wyoming BHA teamed up with Trout Unlimited, Wyoming Game and Fish, and the Forest Service to host a kids fishing day at Bear Lodge in the Bighorns. Over 35 kids joined and enjoyed catching fish, eating hot dogs, and gorging on cotton candy.

In July, we joined the Forest Service and Wyoming Game and Fish to complete phase three of the Big Willow Beaver Dam Analog project. This phase included installing fencing to protect the willows and analogs installed the prior two years.

In August BHA teamed with Wyoming Backcountry Horseman to clear trail outside HF Bar ranch. We also partnered with the Lander BLM office to remove old barbed wire fence in the Sweetwater Canyon Wilderness Study Area.

“Wanting to know my food sources more intimately was exactly why I started hunting a decade ago, and remains an integral aspect of my hunting ethic. And since becoming a hunter, I have been practicing “venison diplomacy.” Even in the tensest situations, I’ve found you can reach most anyone’s heart through their stomach. Nothing warms people up to the idea of knowing exactly where your food came from like sharing a tasty meal.”
