event_description:   Join WV BHA at Sleepy Creek WMA on Saturday, October 12th for a skills camp teaching the fundamentals of backcountry hunting and camping. Instruction will take place from 9am – 3pm. WV DNR representatives will also be discussing Wildlife Management and habitat at Sleepy Creek. Join fellow members who will be camping and hunting over the weekend to test out your new skills.Skills to be covered:Selecting a campsiteBear safety in the backcountryHygiene in the backcountryNecessary gear, uses & maintenanceFire starting methodsMap reading & navigationE-scouting locations in advanceSingle rope tree climbing techniqueTracking game & cutting signGame processing (if your BHA Chapter Leader is successful at hunting)Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for weather considerations and walking over uneven terrain. Skills to be covered:

  • Selecting a campsite
  • Bear safety in the backcountry
  • Hygiene in the backcountry
  • Necessary gear, uses & maintenance
  • Fire starting methods
  • Map reading & navigation
  • E-scouting locations in advance
  • Single rope tree climbing technique
  • Tracking game & cutting sign
  • Game processing (if your BHA Chapter Leader is successful at hunting)
