Join fellow BHA members and the Black Hills Flyfishers on July 27th to paint trees for beaver mitigation and habitat restoration. Volunteers should meet at east side of the Civic Center parking lot at 9am.
Rapid Creek, like many urban areas, has beavers. While the beavers have many benefits to water quality, water sequestration, fish habitat etc., we also have some challenges such as losing tree cover to keep water cooler. Painting trees that are considered to be of a higher value, with a mixture of paint and sand, can prevent beavers from gnawing. Beavers, like humans, do not like grit in their teeth.
The City of Rapid City recognizes the importance of this project and is supplying us with paint and other materials. This is the first time that the city is supporting this effort! We would love to see a huge turnout of volunteers. This event will run from 9am until noon.
Saturday may be very warm in Rapid City. Dress for the weather and sun protection, but keep in mind we will be painting, so clothes may get dirty. We encouraged footwear that can get wet and gloves.
Black Hills Flyfishters will provide all supplies and materials, but if you have an extra course paintbrush and a five gallon bucket feel free to bring them along.
After the event we will retreat to the safety of the Lost Cabin Brewing Co.
Hope to see you on Saturday!
