Taking photos that capture the spirit of our public lands and waters - and the experiences we have on them - is essential in communicating the value of our wild landscapes and the richness of our outdoor pursuits to the greater public.
Send us your photos that best tell the story of our wild public lands, waters and wildlife for the 2022 Public Lands and Waters Photos Contest, presented by the leader in outdoor photography and videography gear supply, Bedford Camera & Video.
Be sure to include a caption with each submission. Our panel of judges will be selecting standout images - and presenting the photographers with great prize packages featuring BHA's corporate partners. BHA will utilize your images throughout the year to bring awareness and ignite action around our work, from upholding fair chase ethics and our outdoor traditions to fighting for policies that influence access and opportunity across North America.
The Categories
At Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, we love seeing images of our members out in the field. This year we are asking that you submit photos for four different categories:
- Hunting
- Fishing
- Wildlife and Wild Places
- Backcountry Experiences
We are looking for innovative images that showcase the diversity of experience that BHA members seek when we go out on our public lands and waters...with friends, family or solo...to experience the solitude, challenge and adventure that only the backcountry offers.

The Judges
Aaron Agosto
Aaron is a freelance photographer out of Bigfork, Montana. Born in Cape Cod, then growing up in Pittsburgh, PA he eventually settled down in Montana, where he is easily talked out of almost any responsibility in favor of going fishing. His work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Big Sky Journal, and Backcountry Journal and he has provided imagery for Patagonia, Yeti, and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, where he also sits on the board of the Montana state chapter as the Flathead Valley leader
Natalie Krebs
Krebs graduated from Northwestern University in June 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Medill. She's currently living in Arkansas and working as Senior Deputy Editor for Outdoor Life.
Jed Conklin
Born in the Ohio River town of Owensboro, Kentucky, Jed’s photography has taken him across the country and around the globe. He is currently based in Sun Valley, Idaho with his wife and two children. See his work at www.jedconklin.com.
Candace Dantes
Candace Dantes is a fourth-generation cowgirl and award-winning journalist based in the Georgia Black Belt Region. Raised on her great-grandparents’ cattle farm outside of Milledgeville, Georgia, Candace's family still owns and stewards centennial farmland. Currently, the print-to-digital content creator serves as marketing and communications manager of national not-for-profit organization Outdoor Afro; project manager for U.S. Department of Agriculture research grant Black Farmers' Network; and brand ambassador for Wrangler and Justin Boots to help change the narrative of Black people's contributions to the American West and American South storylines.
SUBMISSION CRITERIA
-No limit on the number of submissions
-Submit fully processed JPEG or TIFF files with caption
-Do not submit photos of children without parental consent
-Deadline for submissions is Friday, Dec. 31 2022.
-Grant non-exclusive rights to BHA
