event_description: Help improve habitat permeability and connectivity on the Taos Plateau! July 19-21 2024                                           Join Habitat Steward Coordinator Bard Edrington V for a fence modification workday on the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument.  The Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument is an important wintering area for elk and mule deer and year-round habitat for pronghorn.  The plateau is a multi-use area that has miles of fencing separating grazing allotments.  Much of this fencing is not wildlife friendly and can cause direct mortality, injury and hair loss.  Pronghorn are not great jumpers and can become trapped behind fencing thus fragmenting their habitat and causing them stress.  Deer and elk risk becoming entangled in the fencing when jumping over. That is where we come in. We will be removing removing the bottom barbed wire strand and replacing it with a smooth strand set at 16" off the ground. Your help will have a direct benefit to wildlife habitat and connectivity.                                                                                 This event is sponsored by Dometic and Santa Fe Brewing Company Free fly fishing clinic and fishing trip into the Cruces Basin Wilderness with Nick Streit of Taos Fly Shop.                                       We are pleased to have Nick Streit from the Taos Fly Shop and The Reel Life in Santa Fe, join us for the weekend.  A member of the 1998 Junior Fly Fishing Team USA, Nick has been guiding for over 20 years.  He has fished and guided from Alaska to Argentina, and is known for his passion to teach anglers of all skill levels through classes and guiding.  Nick will give a free fly fishing clinic on Saturday evening followed by a Sunday trip of fly fishing into the Cruces Basin Wilderness.  This is an amazing opportunity to go into one of our most treasured wilderness areas in New Mexico.  Nick is also the founder of Friends of the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument.  https://www.riograndefriends.org/Friends Of RGDN believes that land protection can’t be fully realized without careful and meaningful land stewardship.
