Take Action to Allow Montana to Offer Raffles AND Auctions for Big Game Tags

Montana BHA has been tracking and engaging on a large number of bills during this legislative session, and we are urging you to support House Bill 283, which would allow Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) to raise funds for wildlife conservation through both raffles and auctions.

This bill has a hearing tomorrow Feb 03, at 03:00 PM in the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee, Room 172.

While auctions have raised significant funds, they often favor the wealthy and limit access to public wildlife. Raffles are currently not allowed for sheep and moose tags, and with a lower barrier to entry for participation, raffles are often a more inclusive way to involve more Montanans in conservation efforts. For example, in 2024, a BHA mule deer raffle raised a record $56,620—38% more than the previous auction record.

HB 283 allows the Fish and Wildlife Commission the flexibility to use whichever method—auction or raffle—will generate the most revenue for each species, ensuring both financial efficiency and equitable access. With 90% of the revenue generated being used for projects that benefit the species, such as habitat improvements, this flexibility will be better for Montana’s wildlife in the long run.

Just as businesses diversify strategies to mitigate risk, Montana can diversify its wildlife funding approaches. By supporting HB 283, you help ensure that Montana remains a leader in both equitable access and effective wildlife conservation.
