Join us for a day or two of fence pulling with a special treat! We will start Saturday and Sunday mornings with a sharp-tailed and greater sage grouse lek viewing. If you've never seen these critters do their very elaborate and interesting mating dances we recommend putting this event on your calendar! This project will greatly enhance wintering habitat for elk and mule deer but also the sharp-tailed and greater sage grouse.
**Event is capped at 25 participants, so be sure to RSVP! If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP accordingly to make room for others!**
What to Expect:
Volunteers are welcome to arrive anytime on Friday, April 4th to set up camp at Trail and Hitch RV Park (reservations are required). Park has tiny homes, yurts, and is open to tents and RVs. We'll convene casually at the Smoky River Brewing Friday evening. For those interested in lek viewing, we will meet at Meeker Town Park at 5am and carpool/caravan to observe Sharptail and Sage Grouse leks who will hopefully be busy spring drumming. From the lek viewing we will transition to the work site where we will work to remove two miles of old barbed wire fence off the landscape. We will try to finish at a reasonable time so folks will have time to fish, hike, or relax at camp if you're staying for the full weekend. Even if you can’t swing the overnight stay we would love to have the help for either day!
BHA will provide lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to bring supplement food, snacks, or drinks.
What to bring for the lek viewing:
Warm layers for the early morning chill. You can bring binoculars and or spotting scope as well. There will be some extras to pass around so everyone gets a chance to enjoy this spectacular natural show!
What to bring for the work day:
Leather gloves, safety glasses (sunglasses are fine), and work gloves and fence tools (pliers, post puller, etc) if you have them but not necessary. Plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and proper clothing for working outside and removing fence (jeans, boots, long-sleeve shirt).
What to bring for camping:
Camping gear if you intend to stay the night. Late April can still be pretty chilly at night, so pack accordingly. BHA is providing lunch Saturday and Sunday so bring breakfasts and dinners to cook on your own. Bring your fishing rod if you would like, the White River is nearby!
*Event is rain or shine. If heavy snow occurs, we will assess and reschedule accordingly.
