Last month, SD BHA celebrated the dedication of “The Stengle Tract,” a 560-acre addition to the Frozen Man Creek Game Production Area in Stanley County, South Dakota which marked a significant conservation and public access achievement. The initiative was a part of Pheasants Forever’s Build a Wildlife Area program, designed to create sustainable landscapes that support wildlife while providing recreational access. The new tract ensures permanent hunting opportunities and habitat for various species, including mule deer, pheasants, and other upland game.
The addition is a culmination of efforts between Pheasants Forever, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and many other conservation partners who contributed to help make this project happen. The South Dakota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers contributed $5,000 to the project.
The tract honors the late John Stengle, a dedicated hunter and community member and it reflects his lifelong passion for hunting and public lands. His daughter, Nicole Stengle, contributed $150,000 to ensure public access to the land, emphasizing its importance for future generations of hunters. A memorial stone honoring John Stengle was placed at the site. Additional habitat improvements are planned to enhance biodiversity and improve soil health.
SD BHA thanks Pheasants Forever and South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks for their leadership on this project and for the opportunity to support sustainable conservation and public access for generations to come!
