This is a fantastic way to get to view sheep and to explore new country. Our efforts help to ensure an accurate count of the population which ultimately impacts herd management and hunting opportunities.
The current plan is to camp at the Mission Creek Stonehouse Friday evening through Monday morning for those available. We will conduct surveys on Saturday 3/4 and Sunday 3/5 (if necessary) with a focus on rams Saturday and other sheep on Sunday. Of course the locations of the sheep will dictate our schedule so no hardline plans as of yet, but ideally we’ll split up into several groups with a CDFW representative skilled in telemetry leading each group. For anyone interested, we may walk a 6-mile transect from Mission Creek to the Whitewater drainage on Sunday as well. CDFW may have some folks sit at the Whitewater Ranger Station if we get hints they’re hanging around there.
If some of you are only available for a single day or a limited time, feel free to shoot me an email. Also, just a heads up, we should be sharing the Mission Creek Stonehouse with about 15 folks from the Sierra Club (unrelated to our survey) over that weekend. It should make for some interesting conversation.
The Stonehouse is located here:
34.01686, -116.62803
You’ll essentially travel to Mission Creek Road off Hwy 62:
33.98446, -116.58351
and follow the road until you reach the Stonehouse.
Please RSVP only if you plan to attend and be sure to bring several gallons of water. We will have some additional refreshments available, but please bring food and camping equipment. Good shoes, long sleeves and sun protection are highly recommended. Also, bring all the glass you got. Binos, spotting scopes and tripods if you have them.
