The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and Las Cruces Bureau of Land Management office have identified a section of netwire fencing that needs removing to allow wildlife to freely move without becoming entangled in the wire. This section of fencing just happens to be on top of rimrock mountain. A ~1.5 mile hike up ~700' in elevation will be required to access the fencing. It is a steep hike on rocky terrain and we will have to carry tools and amenities to the top. The goal will be to remove sections of fence, roll it up into manageable sizes and stage it on the edge of the mountain. Once the fence is in rolls and staged we will "send it" down the mountain. By send it I mean roll it. There is no good way to carry the fencing down the steep rocky terrain so rolling it will be the best method. Once at the bottom we will carry it to side by sides and atv's to be loaded in the trailer. This work will be moderately strenuous and in a backcountry setting, if this sounds fun and challenging then please join us.
When you attend this event you will be entered to win a $250 gift certificate to Sitka. Each NM BHA stewardship event you attend in quarter 1 of 2025 (Jan-March), you will get 4 entries into the drawing. Eligible only for BHA members. Not a BHA member? Sign up here for only $35 a year.
Rimrock mountain is ~10 miles south of Lordsburg and will require a long drive for most people. BHA will offer a $50 gas card to help with fuel costs. We will be meeting on Friday afternoon, at the camping location, or there is lodging in Lordsburg. On Saturday BHA will provide breakfast burritos and coffee, you will be responsible for your lunch. Fencing will be removed Saturday.
Sunday will be for quail hunting. The area we will be working is surrounded by BLM land and good quail habitat.
ATV's or side by sides will be very helpful on this project. If you have the ability to bring yours it would be greatly appreciated.
