On Wednesday June 26th we met at the Common Roots Brewing Company, Albany Outpost for a great onX sponsored Pint Night with the NYSDEC Bureau Chief of Fisheries, Steve Hurst.
Steve enlightened us with an informal talk about the latest management plan proposed for brook trout ponds in the Adirondacks.
Did you know the brook trout is NY's state fish?!
Did you know New York and Maine are the only places you can find heritage strain brook trout ponds?!
These heritage strains are the same wild brook trout living in the Adirondacks since the retreat of the glaciers from the last Ice Age! This plan seeks to manage the remaining ponds in NY to facilitate the growth and expansion of the few remaining heritage strains in the face of climate change and human encroachment. As some ponds have rebounded from the acid rain, killing entire lakes a few decades ago, others are in jeopardy of warming too much for brook trout to survive, the plan provides a way that we can help preserve this iconic fish for all to enjoy now and into the future. Be sure to stay tuned for more information on the plan as the DEC rolls out the finalized version of it.
