Developing habitat maps and functional assessments of over 5,000 wetland acres
The Mendenhall Wetlands not only provide opportunities for sport and subsistence hunting and fishing, but they are also a globally important bird area according to National Audubon and have even been called a "fish factory." It’s also the most popular waterfowl hunting destination in Southeast Alaska, so yeah, you could say it’s pretty important to the conservation community.
The Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEALT) Maps Juneau’s Tidelands
Juneau will soon have an updated map of its cherished tidelands. The Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEALT) is working on a project to update the 1979 maps created for the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge, which were used in its 1990 Management Plan. This project will provide a new, up-to-date understanding of habitat types, vegetation communities, and the effects of post-glacial uplift on the Refuge and the surrounding wetlands complex. The 5,252-acre project area includes the Refuge and nearby tidal and recently uplifted areas, including 22 properties that SEALT owns and stewards around the wetlands.
Project Team
SEALT has partnered with Bosworth Botanical Consulting, bringing in an independent team of wetlands specialists to create a digital habitat map of the project areas. They are assessing the wetlands, salt marshes, and tidelands, scoring the function and importance of these areas for wildlife, plants, and people.
Alaska Department of Fish & Game
The goal of this landmark project is to support the Land Trust’s work across Taashuyee-Chookan.aani, as well as the Alaska Department of Fish & Game’s stewardship of the Refuge.
Decision Tool
This project is designed to provide SEALT, ADF&G, and other partners with meaningful, contextual data for decision-making. The scale of the project will inform future conservation efforts and guide responsible development in the area.

If you hunt or fish the wetlands, you're likely familiar with the ongoing changes and have adapted your strategies accordingly. Come learn more about SEALT's mapping project and enjoy a pint of Forbidden Peak's BHA brew, Public Lands Pale Ale, to kick off Public Lands Month!
This Pint Night was one is a series sponsored nationally by onX Hunt!
As are all of our Pint Nights, this will be a casual, fun way to meet fellow hunters and anglers, swap stories and learn about BHA and our mission to conserve public lands and waters. BHA members advocate for public hunting and fishing and we work to maintain and improve access to places to hunt and fish. We also speak up for wildlife, guided by the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. Finally, we believe in and advocate for fair chase in pursuit of fish and game. If those ideals resonate with you, please come join us to learn more and maybe become part of BHA.
This event was free and open to all. Our friends at onX Hunt will provide a free, one-year Premium One State Membership for the first 15 attendees who initiate or renew a BHA membership at this event.
Can’t join us, but want to support Public Land, Waters and Wildlife? Join BHA today or make a donation.
