We’re looking forward to getting to work during Public Lands Month in Rhode Island by teaming up with state biologists from the RI Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Fish & Wildlife to assist in maintaining and clearing debris from a water control structure on Switch Road in Carolina WMA (Richmond, RI).
The Division of Fish & Wildlife operates water control structures around the state to create wildlife habitat for aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife and to seasonally meter the flow of surface water runoff to prevent flooding of adjacent roads and neighborhoods. Periodical maintenance and clearing of debris, especially in areas where creatures such as beavers like to build dams of their own, is vital to the proper function of these control structures and the wetland creatures that rely on them.
This project will involve removing debris that has built up over years of minor maintenance and clearing them from the vicinity of the water control structure, so that if (when) a major storm blows through it doesn’t get washed back into the waterway and cause a major backup and flooding in the surrounding area. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear to clear woody debris, and bring work gloves, bug spray and water and a snack. All tools and implements will be supplied by DF&W and/or BHA."
We’ll be meeting at the work site on Switch Road approximately 1.3 miles north of the intersection with Pine Hill Road.
