Announces Gate Project Completed at Cedar Creek WMA
Fort Smith, Ark. (October 16, 2024) – The Arkansas chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) today announced the completion of a BHA-funded gate project at the Cedar Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Scott County. The gate project was the final phase of a land donation to the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (AGFC) that BHA secured in 2023.
In 2023, the Arkansas BHA chapter, through a collaborative effort with a private landowner, purchased and donated a critical one-acre parcel of land to the AGFC. This land purchase provided permanent public access to 103 acres of the Cedar Creek WMA, which had previously only been accessible by crossing adjacent private property via an easement.
"Our chapter is committed to ensuring that public lands remain accessible to the public," said Brad Green, one of the Arkansas BHA chapter board members who spearheaded the transfer. "This donation underscores our dedication to improving access for hunters, anglers, and other outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy the Cedar Creek WMA."
The newly donated land necessitated a commercial-quality gate to replace an older, temporary wood frame gate. In addition to the new gate, the donated property offers expanded, easy-access parking for WMA visitors and a more visible location for the AGFC’s “trademark” green WMA sign to help visitors find this hidden gem.
When the AGFC officials identified the need for a gate at the newly donated property, BHA rallied its members to raise the $4,500 needed for the project. "We are incredibly grateful for the support of our members who made this donation possible," added Larry Haden, Chair of the fast-growing Arkansas chapter.
The AGFC expressed its appreciation for BHA's continued support and stewardship of the state's public lands. "BHA's commitment to public lands is truly commendable," said Jason Mitchell, AGFC Biologist overseeing Wildlife Management Areas in Region 5. "Their efforts at Cedar Creek WMA are a testament to the positive impact that collaborative conservation efforts can have on our public lands."
