The Steese National Conservation Area is hosting volunteer trail work events on the Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail. To begin work, volunteers will check-in at the Eagle Summit Wayside parking lot between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 5, 6, and/or 26. Volunteers may stop working at any time but must check out with BLM staff before leaving. Volunteers will be provided an orientation to the day's work, including a safety briefing. To reach the work site, volunteers may hike up to two miles. Work will include building a boardwalk and helping with tundra rehabilitation by raking out ruts, placing water bars and recontouring areas to direct waterflow. Work may involve bending, stooping, and squatting; working with lumber; working with hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes; working with or around power tools such as drills and drivers. Tasks may also include other light duty assignments to facilitate orchestration of the volunteer event. Tools and personal protective equipment such as work gloves and safety glasses will be available. However, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves and hand tools such as shovels, metal rakes and garden hoes. Weather conditions are highly variable at Eagle Summit. Volunteer should wear layers suitable for working in cool, windy, and possibly rainy conditions. We recommend waterproof boots as the trail will likely be muddy. BLM staff trained in Wilderness First Aid will be on site with first aid kits and emergency communication devices. Volunteers must adhere to event COVID protocols based on the most current CDC and DOI policy, hand sanitizer and masks will be provided.
