Urge the Forest Service to Stop Sulfide Mining in the Boundary Waters Watershed

Each year the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) attracts more dedicated backcountry hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts than any other wilderness area in the U.S. The Boundary Waters’ seemingly endless string of quiet, productive waters offers anglers phenomenal fishing for walleye, smallmouth, lake trout and northern pike. The vast tracts of largely unpressured forest land provide unique backcountry hunting opportunities for ruffed grouse, whitetail deer and black bear.

These opportunities, treasured by so many sportsmen, are at risk. Large-scale sulfide-ore copper mines have been proposed within the Boundary Waters watershed that would threaten this irreplaceable fish and wildlife habitat, along with the traditions passed down by generations of Great Lakes sportsmen. The priceless opportunity to connect with one of the few Upper Midwestern landscapes that remains wild and untamed is being jeopardized by extremely risky industrial development.

Help BHA urge the U.S. Forest Service to standup for this backcountry destination and to:

  1. Not consent to the renewal of already-expired federal sulfide-ore copper mineral leases.
  2. Withdraw the federally-owned minerals within the Boundary Waters watershed from the federal mineral leasing program.
