event_description: The Muddy Waters Tour is a compilation several opportunities and events across Illinois designed to increase awareness, education and involvement in conservation in Illinois waterways.Join BHA on July 22nd, 2024 at 5:30PM  (CT) for a Muddy Waters Tour Townhall Meeting in Carbondale, IL. This is an added agenda item to the Monthly Natural Resources Meeting specifically carved out to discuss the issues surrounding recreational use of our waterways in Illinois. Widely misunderstood, the ability to float water in Illinois is not as clear as it may seem. Federal law granting the public access to navigable waterways is contradicted by Illinois law and your access to one of our most crucial natural resources is limited. An estimated 2% of moving water is publicly accessible under Illinois state law, even though much more is considered public under federal law, leaving uncertainty in the conservation of our true wild places. We will discuss the current state law, the issues it creates, how to be involved in your public wild places and the possibility of future of access.
