Join Illinois BHA on July 25th at The Cabin on Judy Creek in Glen Carbon, IL for a historic stop as part of the Muddy Waters Tour. The Muddy Waters Tour is a compilation several opportunities and events across Illinois designed to increase awareness, education and involvement in conservation in Illinois waterways. Federal law granting the public access to navigable waterways is contradicted by Illinois law. Only an estimated 2% of moving water is publicly accessible under Illinois state law, even though much more is considered public under federal law. We will discuss the current state law, the issues it creates, how to be involved in your public wild places and the possibility of future of access.

In 1801, Colonel Samuel Judy received a military grant for 100 acres of land near the base of the bluffs just north of Judys Branch, and became one of the first permanent settlers of Madison County. The land was called Goshen Settlement, after the biblical land of Goshen. Settlers would use Judy Creek to travel back and forth to the Mighty Mississippi River. There are even local rumors Honest Abe Lincoln and Colonel Samuel Judy's son Thomas would stop at the grocery store/brothel on Judy Creek, which is now The Cabin at Judy Creek.
