Looking for a way to give back to your public lands in tangible ways? Come join fellow BHA members for some good times in the Great Bear Wilderness! Get dirty and a bit sore while experiencing a true connection with the landscape through Stewardship.
Volunteers will meet the Crew Leader Wednesday morning in Hungry Horse and caravan the hour drive to the trailhead. After sorting gear and supplies for the packer and shouldering your backpack, you will hike the 12 miles into camp. Basecamp will be on the Wild and Scenic Upper Middle Fork of the Flathead, deep in the the Great Bear Wilderness.
Thursday- Sunday volunteers will be working on trail #155. Reestablishing the trail bed (tread) and improving backslope will be the primary focus. Pulaskis, shovels and hand saws will be the tools of choice. After work relax by the river or try your luck at fishing! There will be a day off mid-week to explore the area (hike to Bradley Lake) or just focus on fishing. Monday the group will pack up and hike back out to the trailhead and civilization.
The remote setting of the Middle Fork keeps the wilderness portion relatively free of both fishermen and floaters. Except for during spring run-off, which can last well into July in some years, the waters of the Middle Fork Flathead River are exceptionally clear. Be sure to bring your camera, fishing gear and license!
All food, tools and group gear will be provided. For a personal pack list and other helpful information, click here.
