MI BHA Chapter Applauds DNR’s Decision Halt Development in Gaylord Forest Mgt Unit

The Michigan chapter of BHA is pleased to report that, following our call to not skip the public input process, the Michigan DNR has halted further plans on a proposed 400 acre solar farm within the Gaylord Forest Management Unit. This decision is a significant win for conservation and public land protection, reflecting the power of community engagement and the importance of thoughtful land use.

After reviewing the project, we saw the lack of transparency and availability for public comment, which raised red flags. BHA believes public participation for public land projects is pertinent to give sportsmen and women a voice for their public lands. While this is a positive step forward, BHA remains committed to ensuring that future land-use decisions protect the integrity of Michigan’s public lands for generations to come.

BHA’s Advocacy: Ensuring Public Lands Are Protected

When the DNR first proposed leasing 400 acres of state-managed land for the solar farm, BHA quickly raised concerns. The potential impacts of the project on wildlife habitat, public access, and the ecological health of the area were troubling. Public lands play a crucial role in providing spaces for outdoor recreation, supporting wildlife, and maintaining healthy ecosystems, and BHA felt that these values needed to be preserved.

In response, BHA issued a call to action, urging members to voice their concerns and advocate for a pause on the proposal. We also submitted formal comments to the DNR, requesting that the project undergo a more thorough review process, including a 90-day public comment period to ensure full transparency and community input.

The Outcome: A Temporary Halt to the Solar Lease Proposal

Thanks to the efforts of BHA members and other concerned stakeholders, the DNR has responded by halting any further solar lease considerations on state lands—for now. This decision represents a strong indication that public input and conservation concerns have been heard. It gives us an opportunity to reevaluate how best to balance the need for renewable energy development with the imperative to protect public lands and wildlife habitat.

Looking Ahead: BHA’s Continued Commitment to Land Conservation

While this is a promising development, the conversation about land use and renewable energy is far from over. The Michigan chapter of BHA will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for responsible management of our public lands. We are committed to ensuring that any future land-use decisions prioritize both the needs of renewable energy and the preservation of Michigan’s valuable natural resources while allowing for Michigan residents to voice their opinions.

We encourage all sportsmen and women in Michigan to stay informed and involved. It’s crucial that we continue to speak out for the protection of our public lands and the wildlife that depend on them, especially as new proposals are introduced.

Together, we can ensure that Michigan’s public lands remain accessible, healthy, and sustainable for generations to come.
