MI BHA Chapter Advocates for Responsible Public Land Use

The Michigan BHA chapter continues to actively advocate for the responsible management of our state’s public lands. Recently, we submitted our concerns regarding the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) proposal to lease 420 acres of state-managed forest land within the Gaylord Forest Management Unit for solar development. Our letter, shared with the DNR, emphasized concerns about the potential impacts on public access, wildlife habitat, and traditional uses of these lands.

While we recognize the importance of renewable energy in the fight against climate change, we believe such projects must be thoughtfully sited. Public lands play an irreplaceable role in conserving fish and wildlife habitat, providing recreational opportunities, and supporting Michigan’s outdoor heritage. As we outlined in our letter, it’s essential that all stakeholders are involved in decision-making. We urged the DNR to ensure transparency and initiate a robust 90-day public comment period before proceeding with any lease agreements.

This issue has sparked statewide concern, as highlighted in recent coverage, and has led the DNR to pause future solar array land leases. The public’s reaction underscores the need for balanced approaches to renewable energy development that safeguard the ecological and recreational value of our state-managed lands.

In addition to our engagement on solar farm proposals, Michigan BHA is also working closely with agency partners on the 2024 draft state forestry management plan. This collaboration reflects our commitment to ensuring that Michigan’s public forests are managed sustainably to support wildlife, water resources, and outdoor recreation.

As stewards of Michigan’s public lands, we will remain vigilant in addressing proposals that affect our state’s natural heritage. We encourage all members to stay informed and involved, as your voices are vital in shaping the future of Michigan’s public lands. For more details, you can read our full letter to the DNR below. Stay tuned for further updates on these important efforts.
