Join Montana BHA as we partner with the National Wildlife Federation and the Bureau of Land Management for a boots-on-the-ground stewardship project to remove 70-year-old jackleg and barbed wire fence on BLM land near Melrose, Montana. We will also be joined by Randy Newberg and his crew from Fresh Tracks for this event!
We will be working at the base of the Highland Mountains in a parcel that serves as a major migratory corridor for pronghorn and important winter range for elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. Partners will collaborate to enhance wildlife movement corridors by removing approximately 3 miles of barbed wire fencing. By improving this habitat and enhancing connectivity for wildlife, we can increase species' resilience to environmental change, reduce the risk of fence entrapment for wildlife, and decrease the indirect effects that barriers to wildlife have on access to high quality habitat.
We are looking for volunteers for 8am-4pm on Saturday and 8am - 12pm on Sunday. Montana BHA will be providing dinner for folks Saturday night. Exact meeting locations and times will be sent to volunteers at least one week in advance.
Volunteers will need to come prepared with at least 2 liters of drinking water for the workday, their own meals (besides dinner Saturday night), work gloves, sunglasses or safety glasses, and proper hiking boots. This project will entail hauling rolls of barbed wire and fence posts out of steep, rugged country, and volunteers who own frame packs and ATVs are encouraged to bring them to haul out materials. This is difficult work and weather may be variable, so volunteers should be prepared.
Due to the nature of the work, children and dogs are not allowed (leashed dogs allowed at the campground only).
*Please only RSVP if you are serious about attending. RSVP numbers help us prepare appropriate meals, tools, and work and no-shows cost us valuable time and effort. However, we understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, so we ask that you update your RSVP accordingly.
