EVENT RECAP - HORSE PRAIRIE FENCE PULL - JULY 2023

Author: Montana BHA
On July 15th, Montana BHA volunteers gathered to give the sagebrush steppe SW of Dillon a little love. We teamed up with the National Wildlife Federation, private landowners, and the BLM to remove a section of problematic fence along a public/private boundary. Such fencing creates a barrier for big game, especially antelope, and can lead to higher rates of mortality for nesting sage grouse. The fence will soon be replaced with a wildlife friendly fence, meaning higher off-the-ground ...

Conservation licenses required for fishing access, wildlife management areas

Author: Montana BHA
Starting July 1, people using Montana fishing access sites and wildlife management areas who don’t already have a conservation license with their fishing or hunting license are supposed to buy one under a new law passed this legislative session. The change made by lawmakers and signed by Gov. Greg Gianforte means that people who are using a Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks fishing access site only to float the river, hike, birdwatch, or picnic, for instance, will have to purchase a ...

50 landowners awarded free elk tags under hunting access program

Author: Montana BHA
Fifty Montana landowners will be awarded 79 either-sex elk tags as an incentive to allow public hunters access to almost a half-million acres of land in the 2023 hunting season. The Fish and Wildlife Commission approved awarding the tags on Thursday under the Elk Hunting Access Agreement program, also known as the 454 program for the legislation that founded the process in 2001. Critics called the program "bulls for billionaires." Last hunting season, 34 agreements were approved with 41 ...

EVENT RECAP - Horse Prairie Fence Pull - June 2023

Author: Montana BHA
On June 3rd, 2023, despite a dismal weather forecast, 23 conservationists showed up to pull more than a mile of old woven and barbed wire fencing in SW Montana. BHA members and volunteers from all over the state met up with Simon Buzzard from the National Wildlife Federation who provided some conservation history and project goals before we loaded up and drove towards the work site, a region called Horse Prairie. So why were we focused on this specific part of the state? In 2020, Montana ...

FWP statement on corner crossing in Montana raises public land access advocates' hackles

Author: Montana BHA
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ deputy director has raised the hackles of some Montana land access advocates. A recent federal court ruling in Wyoming regarding public access at the corners where a checkerboard of public and private parcels meet has prompted questions about how the ruling may apply in Montana, an FWP spokesman said. As a result, on Thursday the department issued a short press release. “Corner crossing remains unlawful in Montana, and Montanans should continue to obtain ...

FWP accidentally issues too many moose, bighorn sheep licenses; recall ordered

Author: Montana BHA
Four Montana moose hunters and 60 bighorn sheep tag applicants are in for some very bad news. Fish, Wildlife & Parks over-allocated these highly prized tags in seven different hunting districts in its recent drawing. Realizing the mistake, the agency is issuing a recall. Operator error inputting incorrect quotas was to blame, said Greg Lemon, FWP spokesman. Although the data is double-checked, the errors weren’t caught. The bureau’s staff realized the error on May 16 and put a block on ...

Three takeaways from lawmakers’ approach to natural resources management

Author: Montana BHA
Given that Montana’s top two industries are agriculture and recreation, it should come as no surprise that Montanans are quick to engage with policies seeking changes to the water and open space that are foundational to both.  How proposals to change water rights, stream access and conservation funding were received by policymakers the past four months illuminates entrenched sources of tension — between developer and agricultural interests, between federal and state wildlife managers, and ...
