Working Group Commences Meetings to find Viable Funding

A recent meeting was held between the Indiana Division of Wildlife and a working group of representatives from state and national Conservation organizations. The Fee & Licensure Working Group was created by Indiana General Assembly in SB186. Initially, Representatives Randy Frye (District 67) and Tim Wesco (District 21) tried to remove authority of the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) to set DNR fees through a floor amendment. IN BHA Public Lands Packout at Crosley FWA

Seven intrepid volunteers took to the road sides of Crosley FWA last Saturday for a clean up day. The crew cleaned 4.75 miles of roadsides.  The weather was great compared to the stifling heat of the week before. The Indiana chapter was glad to have our first workday at Crosley and look forward to future opportunities to partner with them.   Crosley Fish & Wildlife Area is made up of 4,288 acres of rolling hills, ponds and the Muscatatuck River. Approximately 80% of the property is wooded. ...

A Voice for Grasslands

Have you been greeted by the predawn whistle of a bobwhite? It’s natures version of Bach and Beethoven. A sound so sweet, the greatest composers on earth would have trouble replicating. If you’re lucky, you can still hear their distinct whistle in certain areas of the country.   Just like the native Northern-bobwhite, native grasslands are a habitat of special need and concern. The loss of these biodiverse habitats signals the loss of not only birds, but also several mammals and pollinators. ...

Protect Indiana's Habitat: Urge the Governor to Veto SB 389

The majority of Indiana’s wetlands are under attack as SB 389 has now passed both chambers of the Indiana legislature. Currently, only wetlands that are connected to navigable waters or their tributaries are protected by federal law, while federal protections of isolated wetlands were left unprotected through an administrative repeal of provisions in the Clean Water Act. Thankfully, two decades ago, the State of Indiana recognized the importance of protecting clean waters and high quality ...

Indiana BHA Turns Out for Invasive Species Workday

Author: Joe Jansen
Fifteen Indiana BHA members turned out in the early hours of a cold January morning recently to partner up with foresters from Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources for an invasive species workday at Yellowwood State Forest in southern Indiana’s Brown County. The hunters left their guns at home and the anglers left rods in their cases, opting to show up at first light outfitted with heavy work gloves, eye and ear pro, and a willingness to help maintain Indiana’s public lands. The day ...

Oppose the Repeal of Indiana’s State Regulated Wetlands Law

Author: Indiana BHA
Click here to take action! Up until about 200 years ago, nearly a quarter of Indiana was covered by wetlands. This productive landscape was vital to Native Americans, fur traders, explorers, and settlers. It wasn’t long however, before these marshes were drained to make way for crops. The wetlands that still exist in Indiana today account for only 15% of what was here when Indiana joined the Union in 1816. Now, several state senators have introduced a bill that would further threaten that ...
