RECAP: NY BHA Amawalk/Muscoot River Arbor Day Tree Planting

Author: New York BHA
NY BHA in collaboration with NYC TU, and NY HOC held an Arbor Day Tree Planting Saturday, April 27, 2024 along the Amawalk/Muscoot River near the town of Amawalk, NY. We returned again this year to plant another 50-plus trees on the banks above the Wood St. bridge access point to help improve the habitat for both the fish in the river and the wildlife in the riparian area along the banks of the river. We also built deer enclosures to protect the newly trees until they are grown enough to ...

NY BHA April Newsletter

Author: New York BHA
Update from Chapter Chair Well, May is almost here, and despite the excitement of earthquakes and a solar eclipse, I can’t wait for it to finally arrive! There is no better time to be in the woods than an early morning in May listening to the cacophony of song birds, and, if you are lucky, the sound of a distant gobble! Spending your mornings chasing gobblers, your afternoons fishing or foraging all while the woods green up is a great way to transition from winter. I again want to encourage ...

Recap: Three Rivers WMA - Public Land Packout

Author: New York BHA

NY BHA had a great day Saturday March 30th, 2024 with the Public Land Packout at the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area outside Syracuse, New York. This public land offers hiking, abundant hunting opportunities for deer, waterfowl and small game, trapping, and fishing and they had a great time working to maintain this WMA as part of our stewardship agreement with the NYSDEC.  BHA members and volunteers collected nearly 50 bags of trash to help clean up this area!   Thank you to all the ...

Late Season Grouse on NY Public Land

Author: New York BHA
My wife and I were enjoying a cross-country ski in a New York State Forest.  There was a foot of fresh powder snow and the skiing conditions were perfect.  We had stopped at a trail junction to chat and enjoy the scenery.  It was a cold quiet day in the woods with almost no wind.  The snow was untracked. Except for our ski tracks behind us. The serenity was shattered by the eruption of a large brown bird only inches from my ski tips. It materialized from nowhere, leaving a cloud of fine snow ...

New York BHA Chapter Update - Fall 2021

Author: New York BHA
#whyBHA This month’s #whyBHA is from  Gary Stefani (@ggstef11): I have been hunting and fishing since I was a youngster, but I’m relatively new to the BHA community. I joined @backcountryhunters in 2020, at the excellent #publicgrouse film showing in Syracuse, and volunteered for the New York BHA chapter on the communications team. I was fortunate to grow up in a rural village in eastern MA. I could go hunting and fishing out my parent’s back door, with access to thousands of acres of ...

New York BHA Chapter Update - Summer 2021

Author: New York BHA
From the Chair On a recent trip to the Saranac Lake region I noticed that there was some color in the mountains and the mornings were crisp. Yes, it’s getting to be that time of year when we start shifting gears into the most wonderful time of year. That’s right, hunting season! I hope your scouting trips have proven productive, your weapon is tuned up, your personal fitness is in order and your “to-do” list is cleared. I would like to extend a personal thanks to all of the folks that helped ...
