NV BHA Comments on Washoe County Lands Proposal

The Nevada Chapter of BHA recently commented on the Washoe County Lands Bill Proposal. This proposal is a significant improvement over previous proposals with far less land transfers and some great utilization of Special Management Areas (SMA), National Conservation Areas (NCA) and Wilderness Areas. Clarification on some points will be worked out as it proceeds and with clarification, we are optimistic that we will be able to support much of the bill. One of our major concerns is the Mustang ...

Nevada Legislative Update - May 2023

Hunters and wildlife conservationists scored two major wins in May by killing two bills which would have had significant negative impacts on the state’s hunting traditions and wildlife habitat. The Nevada chapter of BHA was actively engaged in both these efforts, along with a collection of other hunting and conservation interests. Here's more on both bills: SB 90 – Hundreds of Nevada hunters and anglers joined BHA in taking action on this bill, which would have jeopardized ongoing efforts ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 143: Feral Horses on Public Lands in Nevada

Author: Thomas Plank
More than 82,000 feral horses roam U.S. public lands, about four times as many as the land and water can sustain. Almost all of them live in Nevada, the most arid state in the union, where their impacts are almost unimaginable: desertification and massive loss of wildlife, ranging from pollinators and other insects to sage grouse, elk, mule deer and pronghorn. The Bureau of Land Management is doing what it can to address this crisis, but the agency finds itself in an impossible position ...

Governor Sisolak Signs Executive Order to Conserve Migration Corridors and Wildlife Habitiat

Photo by Erich Dutchover The vast, open sagebrush country of Nevada is often overlooked by travelers passing through. Even long-time residents take this drab, grey-green desert shrub for granted. The once ubiquitous sagebrush is vanishing in plain site, yet it rarely gets the attention of other imperiled landscapes. About half of the 500,000 square miles of sagebrush that once covered large expanses of North America still remains. Nevada loses an average of 200,000 acres of sagebrush every ...

Nevada BHA Encourages Wildlife Crossing Development

Each year in Nevada herds of bighorn sheep, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and elk migrate between their summer and winter ranges. This movement is critical to their survival as it allows wildlife to find food and suitable habitat. Unfortunately, in order to get where they need to go, these herds have to cross our state's busy highways. The result is a dangerous mix for both wildlife and people driving. Every year, there are approximately 500 wildlife-vehicle collisions on Nevada’s highways/ ...
