University of Montana Students Attend Rally for Public Lands

Last Thursday, two freshman students from the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers club at the University of Montana skipped class and braved single-digit temperatures to attend the Rally for Public Lands hosted by a coalition or organizations with a shared commitment to keep public lands public and accessible, to defend habitat conservation funding and to uphold our outdoor heritage. Claire McAtee and Joe Graff listened to speakers Mariah Gladstone, Cole Mannix, Hannah Muszkiewicz, and Ryan ...

Forging New Paths: Building Community, Broadening Conservation and Celebrating Wild Food

Author: Trey Curtiss
Written by Trey Curtiss and Kylie Schumacher BHA has often touted that the “backcountry” portion of our organization's name is not only synonymous with wilderness; rather, the backcountry is a state of mind. Whether your backcountry is a secluded portion of the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex in Montana, or a woodlot sectioned off by busy roadways outside Atlanta, BHA defines backcountry by simple guidelines: a place to find solace and derive a deeper connection to the natural world. As a ...

Chasing Quail in Southern Arizona with New Hunters

Bella, my German wiredhaired pointer, rounded the prickly pear cactus and jammed onto a staunch point. I quietly motioned Tyrell and Harrison towards either side of her quivering body. As they approached, the Gambel’s quail rocketed out of the cactus cover. Two shots rang out at precisely the same moment. The bird fell to the ground and Bella was on top it—followed by a quick retrieve. They both had hit the bird! Tyrell and Harrison were participating in a three-day mentored quail hunt with ...

Hunting for Sustainability Continues in Colorado, Montana, and Arizona

We owe tremendous thanks to our partners who made these workshops possible: Timber to Table, G&H Decoys, Boss Shotshells, OnX Maps, Teller Wildlife Refuge, Arizona Wildlife Federation, and Southern Arizona Quail Forever. In case you missed it, BHA hosted three brand new Hunting for Sustainability workshops through our college clubs this spring. This fall, we continued our efforts in Colorado, Montana, and Arizona. In total, 34 students and adult-onset hunters participated in our workshops ...

University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hosts Fly Tying Night

The beauty of the outdoors is so alluring that it drives us to attempt to blend in with our scenic surroundings. We accomplish this through clothing that blends in with the environment, calls that produce sounds like the game we pursue, and even mimicking life itself through decoys and lures. Those in this community strive to mirror and better understand what surrounds us in the outdoors. Take a moment now and imagine yourself standing in a flowing stream. In your hand you hold a fly rod, ...

BHA Awards Rebecca Romero Scholarship to Three New Student Hunters

In 2018, Rebecca Romero was the victim of a hit-and-run collision in Missoula, Montana. She had just graduated from the University of Montana, earning a degree in wildlife biology, and had recently enlisted in the Montana National Guard with future aspirations to become a game warden. Rebecca served as an officer of the UM Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society and an active member of UM’s BHA club. She was a new hunter and immersed herself in numerous programs established to recruit new ...

Tacos On the Fly

Author: Anonym
July in Missoula is characterized by days floating the three major rivers that run through town; the Clark Fork, the Bitterroot, or the infamous Blackfoot, and evenings spent attending concerts at the Kettlehouse Amphitheater or downtown at Big Dipper Ice Cream. One particular float trip with an impromptu visit by a BHA collegiate club member will continue to serve as a reminder to me of what we already knew--community is the secret sauce of BHA. North Carolina State University club ...

Lessons From a Bad Fly Fisher

My fly rod lays in the grass at my feet – the line in a disorganized heap, describing a story of frustration and annoyance. Handicapped by inexperience, I had attempted to battle the wind. It was a fight I had no chance of winning. The fly I had just lost was the last straw along a journey of poor casts, unnatural drifts and spooked fish. Overwhelmed, I half-dropped, half-tossed the rod aside in a quiet tantrum, cursing under my breath. My only previous experience fly fishing was in ...

Hunting for Sustainability Grows through BHA's Collegiate Program

We owe tremendous thanks to Opportunity Outdoors, Modern Carnivore, National Wild Turkey Foundation, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and Agate Lake Resort. Additional resources were donated by the Bill Cook Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, North Carolina BHA, and Minnesota BHA. Hunting for Sustainability first started through BHA's Collegiate Program in 2016. While it was spurred as a way to create new, conservation-minded ...

Public Lands Month: Advocacy within BHA's Collegiate Program

Engaging students in advocacy to protect public lands, waters, and wildlife is at the heart of BHA’s Collegiate Program. Since the program’s inception in 2016, this is how we’ve been educating our college members about important conservation legislation and teaching them how to use their voices to speak up for our wild places. The Great American Outdoors Act BHA members were instrumental in helping pass the Great American Outdoors Act in August 2020 and our student leaders were no ...
