Virginia’s Great Outdoors Act (HB2059) Moves Forward: Action Needed!

Exciting news! Virginia’s Great Outdoors Act (HB2059) has been referred directly to the House Appropriations Committee (HAC), bypassing the Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources Committee. This expedited process means we need your immediate help to ensure VGOA is heard by the HAC Natural Resources subcommittee. You can help by contacting HAC Natural Resources Subcommittee members. Reach out to them via phone or email to express your support for HB2059.   Here’s a template you can ...

Mid-Atlantic Chapter Supports Virginia’s Great Outdoor Act

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is expressing its support for Virginia’s Great Outdoors Act (HB 1297). Introduced by Delegate Paul Krizek of Virginia’s 16th District, this legislation aims to provide $200 million in funding for trails, state parks, public lands, and grant programs focused on conserving natural resources and expanding outdoor access across the state. Defending Our Shared Public Lands: A Call to Action

As I sit here writing in the middle of October, many of you have had the opportunity to chase wild game across the public lands of this great nation. This unique privilege, afforded to us in the United States, is not lost on me or my fellow #conservationwarriors with the Armed Forces Initiative. Currently, I find myself in a hotel room on a Japanese island, longing for the days spent in Virginia’s public lands, pursuing whitetail deer. But today, my thoughts are directed elsewhere. We are ...

Warriors with a New Mission in Conservation

The Armed Forces Initiative is more than just a community; just like the flag we salute, it's a tapestry woven with the threads of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Within our ranks, you will find veterans, active-duty personnel, reservists, National Guard members, and retirees - individuals who have dedicated anywhere from four to 40 years of their lives in service to their nation. It sets us apart, and it's what makes our community truly unique. We share a common bond through our ...

Wilderness in Virginia? Yes, that there is!

Back in the spring I was fortunate enough to participate in a “fly-in” event in support of the LWCF Coalition at our Nation’s capital.  You can read the blog post I published about that experience here; LWCF Coalition Fly-In with Capital Region Chapter and AFI.  During that event I met with Sen. Tim Kaine’s office to thank the Senator and his staff for his continued support of LWCF and ask that they help protect against future recissions.  During that meeting the conversation came up ...

The Land and Water Conservation Fund benefits our nation, so let’s build on it

The following article was first published by The Virginian-Pilot on 15 August 2023.   It is an op-ed I wrote in support of an ongoing collaboration with the LWCF Coalition on behalf of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers.  In doing so, I represented the Capital Region Chapter where I serve as the vice chair and the Armed Forces Initiative where I now serve as the policy chair on the national advisory board.  Opinion: The Land and Water Conservation Fund benefits our nation, so let’s build on ...

Armed Forces Initiative Yellowstone River Fly Fishing Camp 2023

Fly fishing for Yellowstone cutthroat trout on the Yellowstone River or in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park is a bucket list adventure for many.  This July, eight veterans who participated in Backcountry Hunters and Anglers’ Armed Forces Initiative Fly Fishing Camp did exactly that.  The participants included current leaders and potential future leaders from Oklahoma, North Dakota, Arizona, Wyoming, California and Colorado.  Everyone left inspired and filled with a renewed ...

LWCF Coalition Fly-in with Capital Region Chapter and AFI

Capital Region Chapter Vice Chair and Mid-Atlantic AFI Liaison   Recently I had the opportunity to participate in a fly-in hosted by the LWCF Coalition in Washington, D.C.  This is the second time I have participated in a fly-In.  The first was a virtual fly-in, which was in support of the North American Grasslands Conservation Act (NAGCA), hosted by the National Wildlife Federation.  This fly-in was in support of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and there were several ...

North Carolina AFI Turkey Camp

I recently had the pleasure in attending the 2023 North Carolina Armed Forces Initiative Turkey Camp as a mentor.  There was a bit of trepidation on my part about being a mentor as I do not have a lot of experience hunting turkeys.  It was not something my family did growing up in Pennsylvania.  We were the standard white-tailed deer and small game hunters.  All told I have a total of four seasons worth of turkey hunting experience.    Adding to my trepidation is the fact that I have yet to ...
