OPINION: It’s time to put Montana hunters first

Show us a resident hunter who doesn't think there are too many out-of-state hunters in Montana. We’ll wait. Truth is, this sentiment isn’t just from anecdotal observations from packed trailheads and crowded public lands. According to Montana's Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, 29 percent of the total hunters in Montana last year don’t even live here. That’s almost one in three. OPINION: Let's fix the 454 public elk hunting access agreements

Since the now-infamous program was discovered by wealthy, out-of-state landowners like the Texas-based Wilks Brothers, FWP's public elk hunting access agreements have become a point of great contention. The intent of these agreements (colloquially known as 454 agreements) is something to celebrate. They began in 2001 as elk management tools that increased public access and opportunity while providing cooperating landowners with coveted licenses and permits to hunt their own land. ...

OPINION: Outfitter guaranteed hunting license makes hunting elitist

Montana’s hunting opportunities are the envy of other Western states, in large part because we place a premium on equal opportunity, regardless of financial means. That’s why thousands of nonresident, do-it-yourself hunters flock to Montana each hunting season, supporting our fish and wildlife and rural economies with their license dollars and purchases. Yet, some state legislators are working to change our hunting opportunities to a system of haves and have-nots: something Montana’s ...
