Maine BHA Chapter Leaders, Rob Bryan, John Simoneau, and Brian Roach are leading two Learn to Hunt: Whitetail Deer sessions through the MDIFW on August 17th at the Sportsman Alliance of Maine Outdoor Center in Augusta. These sessions are to help hunters hone their skills and have some hands-on experience if they completed their hunter's safety course online. The courses are currently full but a waiting list has been established. If you are interested in participating please sign up for the waiting list.
Deer hunting is a rewarding way to spend time in the woods while matching your skills with one of Maine’s most sought after big-game species and procuring heathy meat for the table. This workshop will be a combination of hands-on demonstration and field practice led by experienced hunters.
Session 1 Topics include:
-deer food and habitats
-scouting and finding a spot to hunt
deer hunting techniques
-how to choose a firearm or bow
-other equipment you'll need
-effective stand location and setup
-basic game care
-hunting regulations.
Participants will be able to handle different rifles, bows, and crossbows used for deer hunting and learn in the field. There will be no firing of the weapons.

When you are lucky enough to harvest your first deer, you’ll need the skills and confidence to track and field-dress your deer, and to know what to do next to ensure that your hard work results in high-quality meat for your table.

-safe and ethical shot placement with 3-D targets in the field
-how to “read the shot”
-when to start tracking
-tracking with and without blood
-proper tagging requirements
-field dressing
-getting your deer out of the woods
-skinning
-basic butchering
