Kansas Cheney Wildlife Area Work Weekend, June 11-13

Please join the Kansas Chapter of BHA for a work weekend (June 11th-13th) at Cheney Wildlife Area near Cheney, Kansas! Members from all over the state will assemble to help with reconstruction of the Deweese Campground under the supervision of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. This is a free to use campground on 5400 acres of public hunting area!!  We will specifically be creating identifiable campsites by clearing brush, installing new concrete-based fire rings and creating new paths to the river. The campground will be closed to the public for the entire weekend, with camping available only to working volunteers. You won't want to miss this chance to get your boots on the ground in the name of outdoor recreation, so RSVP now!

The work weekend will include a Friday night (June 11th) welcome with a discussion of backcountry nutrition. Michelle Ratzlaff will discuss how to ‘Stay Fueled in the Backcountry Without Breaking Your Back or Your Bank Account.’ BHA will provide breakfast on Saturday and the work day begins at 8:00 AM. Saturday will be the day most of the work gets done. Bring your own lunch and then get ready for a big dinner! Waltons will bring their smoker trailer to the campground with plenty of meat for all our volunteers! BHA will provide sides and dessert.  Bring your tent or trailer and join us as we have our first Kansas BHA Campout Project!  Camp out on Friday and/or Saturday night and then finish our work on Sunday. Contact us at [email protected]or call Josh Nicolay at 316/204-5212 with additional questions.

Camping/Lodging: Space for camping will be available at Deweese Campground for working volunteers only. This is a primitive campground with no hookups or running water. Perfect for BHA!! A vault toilet is on premises.

Food and Drink: Dinner is on your own Friday evening. Breakfast will be provided on Saturday. Bring a sack lunch. Walton’s will provide meat for dinner. BHA will provide sides and dessert. Please feel free to bring a side dish and/or dessert to add to the fun.  Bring your own beverages. There is no potable water on site. Alcoholic beverages are allowed on site after work hours.

Gear/Attire: Bring appropriate work wear, safety glasses and gloves. Contact with ticks and poison ivy is a possibility.

Kids:  Kids are welcome and encouraged to help.  No childcare will be provided by BHA. Again, keep in mind that contact with ticks and poison ivy is a possibility.

Dogs:  Please leave dogs at home unless you plan to have someone stay at the camp to watch them. And one more time, contact with ticks and poison ivy is a possibility.

The Kansas Chapter of BHA has developed a great working relationship with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism with several projects in the past two years. This project is a major step forward in that relationship as we will be rebuilding and refurbishing an entire campground. We need all hands on deck for this project!! Please come out to provide some sweat equity for our public lands.

Please RSVP if you plan on attending!
