Jimmy Carter’s Alaska Public Lands Legacy

For Jimmy Carter, conservation was a no-brainer. An avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, in single term as president of the United States, Carter left an incredibly impactful legacy of conservation for generations to come. He began conserving public lands in Alaska early in his presidential term. In 1978, Carter signed proclamation 4611, thus protecting and conserving extraordinarily important land on Admiralty Island.

Greetings from Alaska, the birthplace of packrafting & home to many hunters, anglers & passionate wilderness users. We are stoked to introduce the International Packraft Film Festival (IPFF) - 1st Annual initiative connecting the packraft community around the world through adventure films and the power of storytelling. The film festival will showcase films that celebrate human creativity and paddle diversity - how packrafts have inspired and opened up ways to explore the water of our world, premiering Spring 2025.

The International Packrat Film Festival celebrates packrafts in all of the ways: from whitewater & river travel, multi-day remote wilderness routes, bike-rafting trips, canyoneering tools, fishing & hunting expeditions to family floats on a lazy Sunday.

How do YOU packraft?  Where do you go?  Why do you do it!? What inspires you? What drives you, outdoors?

It's been a busy year (yes, 2025) already!

This week, our Spring 2025 UAS intern starts with Alaska BHA as well!

Meet Lillian Thorington, A UAS senior pursuing her B.A in Environmental Studies:

"I am a proud recipient of both the Girl Scout Gold Award and the Eagle Scout Award, with each of my projects focusing on animal conservation. I moved to Juneau, Alaska to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Outdoor Leadership at University of Alaska Southeast, and plan to stay in state after I graduate. I want to pursue a career as a Wildlife Trooper because I am passionate about protecting our environment and wildlife in order to conserve it for future generations."

Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge and the Juneau Douglas Second Crossing

Sometimes in later winter/early spring 2025, we're expecting a final draft of the PEL study with a recommendation regarding the second crossing location, which will then be open for public comment for an indetermined amount of time.

Stay tuned for events with community stakeholders about how you can stay involved and up to date on the Juneau Douglas Second Crossing, including providing comments on the final draft, ebird and citizen science workshops, wetlands cleanups, and more. Learn more at heartofjuneau.org.

Proceeds from these raffles will help fund ADF&G Conservation efforts, providing opportunities for stewardship, citizen science, and more via BHA's partnership.
