Join us at the Howe Ranch for weekend of fence pulling in rural Routt County North of Hayden, CO. We are going to try and pull 2 miles of interior fencing in important habitat. The Howe Ranch overlaps and occupies the confluence of mapped elk migration corridor, severe winter range, and production area. The Howe Ranch is currently being managed for wildlife and interior fencing on the Howe Ranch is obsolete. Removing these fences aligns with management priorities for the ranch and improves an important habitat for deer and elk. While this is not on public land, the Ranch is held in a conservation easement and a gorgeous property to visit.
Volunteers will remove fence staples and wire clips using bolt cutters, roll up wire, and remove T-Posts. BHA will provide Lunch for both days! We will try to finish at a reasonable time so folks will have time to relax at camp. Free barbecue dinner Saturday night From the Howe Family! Even if you can’t swing the overnight stay, we would love to have help for either day.
Initial meeting at the Howe Ranch Friday evening. We have a great camping spot set up for us with a porta-john and water available. Camper trailers are welcome. We can sit around a fire and chat the evening away while listening to the history of the ranch from the Howe family. Saturday morning, BHA will provide coffee, and we will get to work removing as much fence as we can. BHA will provide Lunch for both days (sandwiches, chips, and a drink)! We will then work until the end of the day around 4 pm. Saturday night we will be treated to a barbecue dinner courtesy of the Howe family. Sunday coffee again in the morning before work starts and then Sandwiches at lunch. We will work Sunday until early afternoon and give folks time to head for home.
Leather gloves, safety glasses (sunglasses are fine), and fence tools (pliers, post puller, etc) if you have them but not necessary. Plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and proper clothing for working outside and removing fence (jeans, boots, long-sleeve shirt). Expect hot days under full sun.
*We will provide water and lunch!*
Camping gear if you intend to stay the night with us at the Howe Ranch. Camping is free. There is an onsite restroom and water is available. There is room for camper trailers.
BHA provides coffee in the mornings, lunch both days and the Howe family is cooking us barbecue Saturday night. Beyond that you will be responsible for supplying your own breakfasts, snacks, and beverages of your choice. If you have dietary restrictions, you will need to make sure you adequately supply your own food. We will be approximately 40 mins from the nearest store.
