This year's Hike to Hunt competition has an added bonus project for BHA members in Southern California. The Chapter will be supporting a US Forest Service directive to catalog and report on 103 guzzlers located in the Cleveland National Forest. As the state heads into a dismal drought year, this project will be critical to support the wildlife that rely on these water sources to get through the dry summer and fall months.
Background: Wildlife guzzlers are man-made water storage structures that are set in remote places to support wildlife populations. There are a number of different styles and designs depending on the targeted species, tank capacity and water supply. Given the climate of southern California, a variety of wildlife has been documented using guzzlers extensively where available and maintained. The Cleveland National Forest Resources staff is currently aware of 103 wildlife guzzlers on the Forest. However, these guzzlers were put in place long ago, and records of maintenance or even their exact locations do not exist.
Desired end goal: To find, evaluate and refurbish guzzlers on the Cleveland National Forest to support wildlife in a critical drought year.
Pint night attendees will be given coordinates of guzzlers in their area to investigate and report on. This is a great opportunity to represent the CA Chapter in the Hike to Hunt Challenge and to support a critical conservation project in the Cleveland National Forest.
