Thank you for your interest! At this time, we have reached our maximum number of volunteers. Keep an eye on your email for future opportunities!
Join Montana BHA as we assist Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks with a bighorn sheep survey on December 11, 2021. We're looking for 8-10 pairs of volunteers, so call up your buddy and tell them they owe you for helping pack out their bull.
With plans to conduct a capture and collar project in early 2022, FWP is looking for help with a preliminary survey to assess sheep numbers in the Highlands. Like most bighorn habitat, this survey will be in steep, rocky, shrubby terrain and largely off trail. Volunteers should be in good enough physical shape to hike safely. Due to the potential difficulty of this survey, we are requesting volunteers pair up for safety. If possible, please coordinate a partner before signing up. If you are motivated to volunteer but do not have a partner, we will try to find another solo volunteer to pair you with!
Volunteers will meet at the I-15 southbound rest area at 8am, Saturday, Dec. 11. FWP Wildlife Biologist Vanna Boccadori will assign survey locations with maps and data sheets, and provide snacks. Volunteers should bring their own lunch and water, binoculars, scopes and/or spotting devices, and a reliable GPS or OnX app. FWP estimates this survey will take 6-8 hours.
If possible, please plan to attend a tailgate info and safety meeting at 7pm, Friday, Dec. 10 at FWP Butte Area Resource Office, 1820 Meadowlark Lane. This is not required, but highly encouraged. Pizza will be provided!
RSVP by clicking the link below and we'll email you asking for a little more information. We will stop accepting volunteers on Nov. 30th to allow adequate time for FWP to plan, so please respond ASAP. We look forward to seeing you at this event and working with our friends at Montana Wild Sheep Foundation to help FWP effectively manage our wildlife!
