Happy Conservation Holidays from Alaska BHA

Great news for Alaska's Public Lands to wrap up 2024!

On December 8, 2024, a significant win for conservation was achieved when an amendment mandating the Department of the Interior to permit the 211-mile Ambler Industrial Road was quietly removed from the final draft of the National Defense Authorization Act during conference negotiations.

This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless advocacy of hunters, anglers, and committed conservation partners who spoke out in defense of Alaska’s wild public lands. Your dedication to protecting these wild spaces ensures that future generations will have the same opportunities to experience the untamed rugged challenges of the Brooks Range.

While this is a cause for celebration, the fight is not over. Proponents of the Ambler Road are determined to push forward, but this success reaffirms that there are champions in Congress who value fish and wildlife habitat, clean water, and the wildest corners of our nation.

Thank you for standing with us to protect Alaska’s public lands and waters. Together, we’ve taken another step toward preserving the heart of America’s wild country.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is proud to support Hunters & Anglers for the Brooks Range in its defense of America’s most remote and wild hunting and fishing grounds. This community played a critical role in achieving a conservation victory for Alaska’s Brooks Range in June 2024, December 2024, and we'll need you you to stand up to future challenges in 2025 and beyond.

AK Chapter Coordinator, Mary Glaves and her husband.

The Alaska chapter coordinator for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers shares her love for the Brooks Range and why the proposed Ambler Road threatens Alaska’s largest tract of wild country.

“My first trip to the Brooks Range was to marry my best friend on a float hunt for caribou. Since then, I’ve hunted Dall sheep, caribou, and moose there. No trip has been quite like that first one, but all have been memorable and rewarding.”

2024: A Year of Growth and Community for Alaska BHA

This year has been an incredible journey of growth and connection for the Alaska Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA). Our community, made up of dedicated and humble individuals, thrives on the enjoyment and fulfillment that public lands bring to outdoorsmen and women.

One standout moment came from BHA Life Member, Judd Manuel, a passionate member of our community, who successfully tagged a pending Boone and Crockett record U.S. Rocky Mountain Billy Goat.

This achievement is not just a testament to his skill and determination but also a celebration of the hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities public lands provide. Reflecting on his hunt during an interview with PJ DelHomme of the Boone and Crockett Club, Judd summed it up perfectly: “Just getting out on public land has been instrumental to my happiness.”

As we move into 2025, BHA’s Life Membership program is evolving. For those who value the work Alaska BHA is doing to conserve public lands access and opportunity, now is the perfect time to act-- Join or gift a Life Membership before the end of the year to lock in the current structure and enjoy new benefits that will come with the updated program.

Let’s continue to build this passionate community of outdoorsmen and women dedicated to conserving Alaska’s wild public lands and wildlife, so we enjoy them for generations to come.
