Come join NMBHA to remove fencing from an inactive grazing allotment in the Gila Wilderness. This is a great chance to meet public land owners from around the state to do a little conservation work and possibly a little scouting for years or hunts to come. Lunch on Saturday will be provided by Gila National Forest and we'll have a potluck in camp that evening.
Schedule:
- 9 am Saturday: Meet at the parking spot (33.07841, -108.01032) along North Star Mesa Road
- Saturday day: Remove fencing
- Saturday late afternoon/evening: Return to camp for potluck
- Sunday: Travel home
What to bring: Leather gloves, safety glasses, fence tools (pliers, post puller, etc), water bottle, personal snacks, proper clothing for working outside and removing fence, and a dish to share at the potluck campout for Saturday night.
Worksite Location & Directions: Gila Backcountry - Turkey Cienega Tank (33.07757, -108.03099)
Parking area for the worksite is 11.5 miles north of Hwy 35 / North Star Road junction along North Star Road. From the parking area, it is a 1.25 mile hike via trail to the Turkey Cienega Tank work site. The campsite is an approximate 1 hour drive from Silver City, NM.
Camp: Dispersed camping will be available Friday and Saturday evenings just off North Star Mesa R. on Forest Rd. 965. There is plenty of room for tents and RVs. (N 33.04213, W. -107.99938).
