The Fort Huachuca AFI Installation Club is excited to work with the Sky Island Alliance to maintain our public lands. With our allies in conservation, we will be working to improve habitat and prevent damage from vehicles by decommissioning roadways.
At a Fort Huachuca AFI event earlier this spring, we heard from National Forest Service personnel that they intend to close down several roads in Coronado National Forest. These roads create erosion control problems, access control problems, and are detrimental to plants and animals on our public lands. Several of these roads were unauthorized altogether. The Forest Service has partnered with Sky Island Alliance to "re-wild" these roadways. Fort Huachuca AFI has been asked to join the effort to conserve these public lands..
On December 7th, 2024 AFI volunteers along with Sky Island Alliance volunteers will decommission roads SW of the Huachuca mountains near Ida Canyon in order to preserve public lands for future recreation and conservation. Volunteers will assist in fencing off the entrance to the roadway, placing signage, and making the road impassable using brush and rock placement. Volunteers should expect to get dirty on behalf of public lands, wear work clothing, and be ready to use hand tools and lift some heavy loads (~60 lbs). Working as a team, we should be able to ensure that vehicle users cannot access roads detrimental to public lands conservation.
The event will start with an optional camp-out on Friday, Dec. 6th at 5pm. We will gather for fun and fellowship that evening and plan the next day's labor.
On Saturday, Dec. 7th, we will assemble at 8 AM to begin work. At the end of the day, we will camp once again at Ida Canyon. Fun, fellowship, and enjoyment of each others' company is sure to follow.
On Sunday, Dec. 8th, we will clean up camp and head home.

Camping overnight on Friday or Saturday night is optional. If you would rather come on Saturday morning to join the event, then go home at the end of the day, that would be completely fine.
There are additional options for transportation open to those that wish to attend. We can likely carpool or go in a convoy from either Sierra Vista or Tucson. Don't be afraid to reach out if you'd prefer a different option than driving to Ida canyon yourself. We can connect you with a driver with room, or another vehicle you can follow.
