CT BHA Comments on Sunday Hunting and Bear Hunting

BHA submitted online testimony in reference to two bills up for public hearing in the Connecticut General Assembly Environment Committee today (3/24/25).

Connecticut is one of the few states that still have a "blue law" of not allowing hunting on Sunday.  H.B. No. 7231, An Act Concerning Sunday Hunting, aims to repeal existing prohibitions against Sunday hunting, thereby expanding opportunities for hunters within the state. Taking all the various hunting seasons into account, upwards of 25 extra days of hunting can be gained if this bill passes.

Bear/human conflicts have risen from approximately 500 to more than 3,500 annually over the past decade in CT. Home intrusions in 2024 topped out at 67, in the last 5 years there have been 7 bear attacks on humans, and bear conflict calls to the DEEP Environmental Conservation police have tripled in recent years. S.B. No. 1523, An Act Concerning Bear Hunting, allows the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to adopt regulations to establish a black bear hunting season which will start to address to bear population control and human safety.
