Comment in Support of Access to the Crossbar SRMA

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on future development and recreation management of the Cross Bar Special Recreation Management Area in the Panhandle from now until June 12.

During the comment period, the BLM is asking to hear opinions from public land owners and other stakeholders on issues regarding the Cross Bar’s current conditions, future proposed recreation management strategies, facilities, infrastructure, access, and recreational opportunities.

Cross Bar SRMA, located just northwest of Amarillo, offers nearly 12,000 acres of undeveloped land for hunting, biking, camping, and other outdoor recreation activities. The Cross Bar is the only BLM-managed surface estate in Texas, and it’s land locked on all sides by private land and the Canadian River. There is currently no means of safe, reliable, or permanent access to the Cross Bar, though the property can be accessed through the river under the highway right-of-way. Public archery hunting for whitetail, mule deer, and hogs is offered through a draw system managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

The BLM has received some funding in the past 20 years to improve the area for outdoor recreation. The agency is now looking for input on its next stage of development.

Public comments can be submitted here (click “Participate Now” on the left side of the page). For more information, visit friendsofcrossbarsrma.org or email us at [email protected].
