Description:

We are seeking an individual with the talent, passion and initiative to further the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers mission throughout Colorado and Wyoming by inspiring local leaders and supporters to action. The chapter coordinator will be the primary liaison between BHA staff and chapter leadership, working closely with the Western regional manager and director of state policy and stewardship. They will support all aspects of chapter operations, including board recruitment and development, fundraising, network and membership growth, policy engagement and relationship building, and grant applications and execution.

The ideal candidate will work remotely with a high level of autonomy, personal ownership and flexibility in a fast-paced work environment. They will be organized, able to quickly analyze and solve problems, collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, evaluate policy issues and develop strategies, prepare professional reports that accurately document activities, adhere to standards of confidentiality and communicate effectively in both oral and written communications. The successful candidate will represent BHA with integrity and champion our mission and values in all facets of their work.

Primary Responsibilities:

The chapter coordinator will engage in the following:

  • Capture, inspire and cultivate willing volunteers to lead the development of state chapters through on-the-ground projects, fundraising events, membership recruitment and engagement on conservation issues that are central to BHA’s mission.
  • Support continuous development of individual leaders and chapter boards by providing mentorship and ensuring leaders are familiar with best practices, policies and resources.
  • Develop, coordinate and execute successful fundraising events with chapter support such as film showings, storytelling nights, field to table dinners, etc. to support BHA operations at a state and North American level and ensure adequate state funds to execute conservation priorities.
  • Seek out, apply for and execute federal and stateside grants to further BHA’s policy and stewardship priorities, build clout, and ensure donor dollars are generating tangible results for conservation.
  • Secure funding to further BHA’s mission through direct donations, corporate partnerships and high-end donor relationship development.
  • Support or manage chapter communications through BHA’s website, email system and chapter-based social media to elevate each chapter’s profile, advance policy priorities, and illustrate BHA’s unique value proposition to existing and potential new members.
  • Monitor and engage on bills at the state legislature related to public lands, hunting, fishing and management of fish, wildlife and habitat.
  • Identify opportunities to highlight or advance chapter work by developing legislative or programmatic updates and activating members and supporters to engage on critical issues through the creation of action alerts, LTEs, opinion columns, statement letters, letters to key officials and legislators and other grassroots policy activities as needed.
  • Work with external partners to advance strategies related to legislative or administrative conservation priorities.
  • Maintain local relationships with the congressional delegation in the region.
  • Work with BHA’s communications staff to solicit and/or generate online content highlighting chapter policy priorities, leaders, or on the ground conservation successes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Preferably a hunter and/or angler.
  • Willing to work flexible hours and travel across CO/WY up to 25% of the time, including periodic travel to the state legislature and high-profile events as needed.
  • Previous experience in nonprofit volunteer management and grassroots organizing is strongly preferred.
  • Must conduct work with integrity, a positive attitude, a propensity to overcome challenges and a focus on developing partnerships, building trust and maintaining strong professional relationships.
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of two years of practical experience.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work with and interact with sportsmen and women and have a general knowledge of current and historical conservation issues, economics and the current political landscape.
  • Must be an innovative and resourceful self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
  • Must believe in and commit to BHA's work and mission.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.

Starting Salary: Dependent on experience. This is a junior-level position, but prior experience will be considered in determining compensation.
