Come join Colorado Armed Forces Initiative with a great conservation project on August 17th! We have partnered with the USFS in the past, tackling this issue, and are looking to do so again. Help us make our public lands better by removing old cattle fences which impede wildlife movement and hunter and angler access. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, make a difference, get some exercise, and make new friends... or drag along that friend or significant other who is always saying "you never do anything fun/new/different!"
We will be removing several miles of old barbed wire fence from elk and mule deer winter concentration areas and migration corridors. Through the project, volunteers will improve habitat and connectivity for big game herds in the Mosquito Range and South Park Basin. This Bureau of Land Management project is in coordination with similar projects in the area being conducted by the United States Forest Service.
This worksite is located on BLM managed land. Dispersed camping is allowed and there is room for tents and trailers at the objective location if you would like to spend the night before or after the workday. If you elect to camp observe open fire restrictions if any are in place.
The event will run from 9am through completion or 5pm, whichever happens first.
Meet at the parking area at the NW corner of Hwy 285 and County Rd 5 (39.15340, -105.99976) west of Fairplay before 9am. Convoy leaves the parking area at 9am sharp. (39.107520, -106.059950).
Please be advised that BHA AFI field events are alcohol free during the event hours.
What you will need to provide:
Leather gloves (if you have them) and safety glasses are required (sunglasses are fine). We will have tools (but feel free to bring your own such as fence pliers, bolt cutters, or post pullers) and spare gloves for those who need them. Please bring a canteen or water bottle and some water, sunscreen, a backpack, and proper durable clothing you're not worried about tearing (jeans/Carhartt’s, boots, long-sleeve durable shirt). BHA CO AFI will provide additional water on site and some snacks to help power you through the day. If you have additional dietary needs, please bring what you need to sustain you.
