event_description: KYBHA in partnership with Kentucky Waterways Alliance (KWA) will provide a participatory science opportunity for staff taking part of the Humana Employee Service Day on August 21, 2024. Specifically, KYBHA will plan and implement fishing mentorship for Humana Employees at the Falls of the Ohio State Park, and collect specimen caught during the event to test for presence of pollution exposure. For many Humana staff, this will be their first exposure to both fishing and conservation, so this is an excellent opportunity to engage folks about the importance of conservation, the benefits of being outdoors, and how we can all do our part to improve water quality. This partnership presents a first-time fundraising opportunity for the Kentucky BHA Chapter, which will be compensated for time and effort, while expenses will be covered by Humana through partnership with KWA. Humana will also be making a capital investing in KYBHA as it will purchase fishing equipment to be used during the event, which will be donated to KYBHA following the event, enabling KYBHA to host fishing mentorship events in the future.Volunteer Opportunity:The event will take place at the Falls of the Ohio State Park on the Ohio River (Indiana) August 21, 2024, from 8 am - 5 pm. KYBHA is seeking 20-30 volunteers to assist with the event. KYBHA is seeking knowledgeable members and guest volunteers with fishing experience to host and provide fishing mentorship during the event. Specifically, volunteers will organize the fishing opportunity, provide guidance and advice to those fishing including tying knots, baiting hooks, handling fish, and collecting and packaging specimen for testing. Volunteers are asked to bring personal equipment to assist operating a spincasting rods, tie knots, cut and manage fishing line, cut bait, and unhook and manage fish. Participants should be prepared to spend the day outside, wearing clothing and shoes that can get dirty, wearing sun protection, sunglasses, hats, and other items that are weather appropriate. Lunch and water will be provided.
