Sorry folks but due to circumstances outside of our control we will not be able to remove fence at the Cimarron SWA this weekend. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Come and join BHA and Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) at the Cimarron State Wildlife Area (SWA) to help CPW remove approximately 1 mile of old fence that will be replaced with new wildlife-friendly fencing. We plan on getting together for a 3-day weekend starting on Friday morning and finishing up in the early afternoon on Sunday. Free camping is available at the Cimarron SWA for the weekend.
Volunteers will need to be able to make a short hike from camping/staging area to project location and be able to pull fence posts, handle pliers to remove and cut wire, coil wire and/or carry old fencing to designated pick up spot.
Cimarron SWA is located between Montrose and Gunnison, CO off of Hwy 50. Map of Cimarron SWA
Directions from Hwy. 50: Turn South on to Little Cimarron Rd and follow for approximately 6 miles. You will see a sign for Cimarron SWA on the right. Turn right onto the SWA Rd, go through a gate and across a bridge over the creek and up the other side. There will be signs posted along the road to point you towards the worksite/campsite. The worksite/campsite is approximately 8 miles from Little Cimarron Rd. The road is not suitable for low clearance vehicles. There is parking available off Little Cimarron Rd at the turnoff if your interested in carpooling.

For those that want to camp there will be space available on the State Wildlife Area at the CPW cabin near the fence pull site all weekend. The cabin site is approximately 26.5 miles east of Montrose via highway 50, the Little Cimarron road, and the local Cimarron SWA access road. See here for directions from Montrose to campsite. There will be signs posted along the road to direct people to the worksite/ campsite. Small camper trailers with experienced drivers may be able to make it to the campsite, but not recomended.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring leather work gloves, pliers, wire cutters, buckets, water bottle or anything else you feel helpful. CPW will provide extra gloves, pliers, and wire cutters.
Bring leather gloves, safety glasses (sunglasses are fine), and fence tools (pliers, post puller, etc) if you have them but not necessary. Plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and proper clothing for working outside and removing fence (jeans, boots, long-sleeve shirt).
Camping is free. For those wanting to camp bring camping gear and make sure you have enough food/ fuel for breakfasts, snacks, and 1 dinner.
