event_description: Join CO BHA on Saturday, June 25 at 8:30am for a guzzler installation project! The drinker location is in Jefferson County southeast of the community of Buffalo Creek, east of Hwy 126 and west of Long Scraggy Peak. General forest area around the drinker includes mature ponderosa pine forest between the Buffalo Creek Fire and the Hayman Fire. There was a moderate outbreak of Douglas-fire tussock moth (a native species) around 2015 that killed some of the Douglas-fir that was competing with pines; USFS has also conducted timber operations to further open up forest canopy and reduce fuel loading. The drinker is located next to a 2-track used by timber operations and fuelwood contractors, but that activity will slow down or cease in a few more years. The general public is not allowed to drive on Spring Creek Road or the 2-track. The current drinker was installed by Turkey Federation in 1990’s; now very weathered and the corrugated sheeting has pulled off the plywood. The gutters on the drip side of the apron are also pulled away. The stock tank is still in good shape, but is straight-sided and lined with forest debris and squirrel carcasses despite the wire mesh escape ramp on the inside.  Wildlife in the area that would use the guzzler are, Elk, Mule Deer, Turkey, Black Bear, Mountain Lions, and small mammals.   The existing Guzzler will need to be demolished and removed and then installation of the new guzzler and build of the new structure.  Volunteers should wear appropriate work clothes and shoes for general landscape work and light construction duties. Lunch will be provided.
