event_description: Utah Backcountry Hunters and Anglers are excited to announce part two of our successful Miles for Muleys fencing project situated in the center of Southern Utah, along the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument outside of Kanab, Utah. This year we will be acting on the data gained through the previous year’s miles of surveying and begin fence removal.Phase II of this project will consist of the removal of a 1.2-mile section of barbed wire fencing. In addition, we will be removing bottom wire stand and making further repairs to supplementary fencing in an effort to improve its overall wildlife friendliness. Each October Paunsaugunt Mule Deer herds, begin their migration high up on the plateau, heading down south into the Buckskin mountains on the Utah-Arizona border. During their travels they encounter a series of old grazing allotment fencing, some of which have not been in use for generations. Unfortunately, this fencing is a potentially deadly obstacle to their migration. Obstructions to migration corridors critically inhibit mule deer winter migration which in turn negatively affecting herd stability. Successful migration is an important factor for overall herd health.Reducing unnecessary stressors, such as unused fencing, can help herds overcome other environmental changes such as climate change and increasing road traffic. This work will help remove these impediments and alleviate stress not only on the mule deer herd but also elk, antelope, and the countless other species that call the area home. The Paunsaugunt herd is one of the premier mule deer herds in the Western United States, and this work will directly impact their continued health and prosperity.Read more about the Paunsaugunt and last year’s event here:https://www.backcountryhunters.org/ut_bha_s_miles_for_muleys_paunsaugunt_fencing_projecthttps://www.backcountryhunters.org/utah_bha_leads_miles_for_muleys_project_for_paunsaugunt_mule_deer_herdUtah BHA will once again be working alongside BHA Arizona chapter as well as our partners: Wildlands Network, Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners, Mule Deer Foundation and the Utah DNR to make this project a reality.A special thank you to our state sponsors Epic Brewing and Cowboy Cauldrons for supplying the brews and fire!Project details When: Volunteers who wish to camp at the group camp site will check in as early as 3:00 pm on Friday May 30th.
