BHA and Hunters & Anglers for the Brooks Range Celebrate the BLM's Denial of the Ambler Road Permit, Defending America’s Most Wild and Remote Hunting and Fishing Grounds for Future Generations.
For the better part of the last year, BHA has been working with the Hunters & Anglers for the Brooks Range coalition to elevate the voices of hunters and anglers that demanded the Brooks Range be safeguarded and remain wild, remote backcountry with world-class hunting and fishing opportunities. Today, June 28th, 2024, it became official. The BLM selected the No Action alternative and denied the Ambler Road permit. Over 14,000 Hunters & Anglers from across the country have voiced their concerns about the risky Ambler Road project.
Proposed route for the Ambler Industrial Road. PC: Hunters & Anglers for the Brooks Range.
Today, we applaud the decision by the BLM to deny the permit for the Ambler Road. America’s Arctic landscape should not be opened for development to foreign interest groups at the expense of these remote, wild places that make Alaska so unique. Our lifestyle depends on our ability to pursue healthy populations of fish and game on lands in and around the Brooks Range. It is uplifting to see that the risks of the road were assessed through public process and that public’s voice was heard.” -Ryan Bandy, Policy Chair, Alaska Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers |

The work is rarely ever done. As we celebrate today, we have to stay poised for continued threats. Earlier this month in a closed-door committee meeting Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) succeeded in attaching an amendment to the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would reverse the BLM’s decision. A final version of the bill has yet to be advanced by the Senate, but BHA and Hunters & Anglers for the Brooks Range remain vigilant and will work to remove this language from the NDAA. This proposal completely disregards the BLMs in depth public process and their decision.
