event_description: Lets grow the Bighorn Observation Program! Western Colorado Universitys Collegiate Chapter of BHA is hosting a public lecture on bighorn and domestic sheep with Southwest Regional Director Dan Parkinson and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society Executive Director Terry Meyers on Thursday, October 3, from 6:30 - 7:30 PM in the University Centers movie theater. The Colorado Chapter of BHA spearheaded an effort in 2017 to use citizen-science to assist Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Forest Service in gathering essential data about the movements of bighorns and domestic sheep in southwestern Colorado. Last year, BHA joined forces with Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society and Great Old Broads for Wilderness under the umbrella of a non-advocacy science group: the Mountain Studies Institute (MSI).  Terry and Dan are expanding the Bighorn Observation Program into the greater Gunnison area; several domestic sheep allotments overlap with bighorn core home range here. They work to gain public awareness of threats to bighorn populations and are developing a group of volunteers to document foraying bighorns and stray domestic sheep on public lands. This is a public lecture not to be missed! For more information on bighorn and domestic sheep, check out this High Country News article from September 2018.
