Friend —
The duck opener is this Saturday in Montana. A few grouse have gone into the pot, and the Tawneys are eagerly awaiting the first frost that will sweeten our McIntosh apples.
Such a glorious time of year no matter where you live in North America. The quickening of the pulse that is the fall. Chasing warm-bodied critters or unsuspecting swimmers, we are so damn lucky.
That’s why I was humbled to be appointed to the Wildlife and Hunting Conservation Council to advise Interior Secretary Haaland and Agriculture Secretary Vilsack. I’ll join 17 colleagues to lend expertise and collaboration on public lands, public wildlife, and fair chase hunting principles. There is much work to be done, and I truly believe that the diversity of opinions within the council will provide opportunities for lasting success.
Within this process, I look forward to working with you all to ground-truth proposals and hear others that you come up with. Together, we will build on the lessons of the past and chart a future we can be proud of.
This work of course, does not solely lie within the council. That is just one process to engage. The work continues in every state, province and territory. You all are on the front lines of conservation, and I like our odds.
It's been a memorable Public Lands Month. Recharge your batteries afield and continue to step into the arena. Go, fight, win!
